Here's a brief race report. Oh, I had fun with this one.
(Sorry, I guess I talk to myself in all tenses and points-of-view. Deal.)
Pre-race
~Metro WAS winning, until those two trains unloaded at Stadium/Armory at the same time. Good thing I'm not claustrophobic.
~Thank goodness for finding the Mafia pre-race, and having some company in the port-a-potty line. We are some fast-looking and good-looking people :)
~Wow, these corrals are actually organized. I'm not fearing for my life like I was at
Hot Chocolate 15k.
~Yes, it sounds like a good idea to start your watch at exactly 8am... when you have 20+ more minutes till you reach the start line. Also, don't bother to notice gun time as you cross the line. Yep, great idea. Guess you don't really need to know overall time the rest of the way.
~Okay, here goes. This one's for you, Grandma. Ack, don't cry, don't cry.
Miles 1-4
~Shit, shit, I'm going way too fast. Why hasn't the 4:25 marathon pace team passed me yet?
~Watching these women in front of me with their bouncing water bottle belts is making me nauseous. How do you run with that extra appendage on your ass?
~Ooh, the cherry blossoms are pretty.
~Nice! An all-female drum line is the first
on-course band. But what are they wearing?
~First water station, and you spill gatorade all over yourself? Great. And BTW, so much for the plan of walking the water stations.
Miles 4-7
~Hey these hills aren't feeling so bad today.
~This is a kickass playlist (if you're on Spotify, I think I can share it)
~Cliff Shot acquisition at 10k- success
~Thank goodness for Jen Strong waiting for me in AdMo.
Miles 7-9
~Wow, Harvard St. is crowded today.
~This playlist stinks. Oh no, wait, it's actually awesome.
~Where are all the Howard students? I was expecting more people to be yelling out of dorm windows.
~Stupid sidesticker on the downhills. Thank goodness it goes away on the flats.
Miles 10-13.1
~Thank goodness for Katie and Annie waiting at mile 10+
~Second acquisition of Clif Shot at Mile 10.5- success (though dripped all over self)
~Whoa, holy inflatable rock star dude over H St. I can't believe we are running under his giant crotch.
~H St is hot and sunny. But the band here is awesome, I kind of want to stay and rock out for a bit.
~Energy totally waning at the H St water station. Maybe I should walk. NO! 4:25 pace group was right behind me this whole time! Follow them! That blue flag is actually the best frosty beer you will ever taste! Go catch it! (Channeling some Anne-Marie strategy here, though I imagine our motivation is a bit different! :) )
~DC Tri club
spinning support group at mile 12.5. I wonder if they know who I am, or if I'm just some groupie cheering and screaming at them like they're a boy band and I'm wearing their gear.
~Why is the band at Mile 13 not playing?!? I was expecting steel drums, darn it.
~Oh, hello, final kick.
~Oh, hello, 13.1. Nice to see you so soon. Nope, I still have no desire to go 26.2.
Post-race:
~Karen's been tracking me online from Lexington Park, awesome. Reading text message- congrats, yada yada- HOLY CRAP that was my time?! Interesting way to find out.
~Yesss... stomach I have conquered you once and for all. I will ENJOY and SAVOR this nice cold one.
~(one hour later) Curse you stomach.
~(one hour later) Screw you stomach. My new post-race tradition is Eastern Market- and there's way too much yummy stuff here to pass up.
I am so so grateful for this whole experience. I learned alot about myself and what I do in the face of adversity and uncertainty. I value, so much, the people I've met/gotten to know better on this journey. I hope we get to continue along together for a while, and a few others get to join us on the ride.
